Protection of the land

In O Espírito da colmea we are committed to our region, A Ulloa. This land is our home, it welcomes us and sustains the life of our bees. The Climate change, which we have experienced acutely in recent years, is alerting us of how essential it is that we take care of the environment. Our survival and that of future generations depend on our ability to protect the land we inhabit.

In A Ulloa there are areas of regeneration of Atlantic forests. It is a landscape where oak and chestnut groves give way to meadows and herds that increase the biodiversity of the ecosystem. The heart of Galicia still resists being taken over by eucalyptus.

The ancestral ways of working with the land, as well as new initiatives linked to the region, guarantee the possibility that the center of Galicia continues to maintain in the future, the landscape that greatly characterises it.

Keeping forest masses intact preserves and balances the heavy load of CO2 that we are experiencing right now, it lightens sudden climate changes and sustains the richness of the soils by fixing the nutrients even if sudden rains occur. Also, widely diverse ecosystems are responsible for ensuring the control of pests and, therefore, ensure the production of healthy food.

In this context, O Espírito da colmea’s work focuses on two issues: the collaboration with Quercus Sonora, an association that acts as custodian of the land in A Ulloa. And the maintenance of hives to safeguard pollinators and our food.

Quercus Sonora

Quercus Sonora is a non-profit association that focuses on the protection of the native forest of the region of A Ulloa.

Ulloa is one of the few areas of Galicia where we can still find some large Atlantic forests. Quercus not only plants tree seeds, they also plant seeds that grow in the form of a sense of community and increased sensitivity, through environmental education and other activities.

14,5

protected hectares

Some of the farms they protect are directly bought by Quercus Sonora. Others however, are transferred by local owners to the association for various purposes such as for them to plant chestnut trees or other fruit trees, elimination of exotic species, cutting to avoid fires and forest protection.

3500

trees planted

Over a few years Quercus has planted chestnuts, oaks, birches, white maple, cherry, walnut, strawberry, holly, and many more native species. These are trees that will give fruits and shade to future generations.

155
